BELLEVUE, Wash. — A man in his 80s was arrested for allegedly fatally stabbing his wife inside a Bellevue senior living facility Monday afternoon.
According to the Bellevue Police Department, officers responded to Sunrise Senior Living on Northeast 20th Street around 1:50 p.m. after 911 callers reported hearing screams from the residence.
When officers entered the scene, they found an 86-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds to the chest. She died at the scene. They quickly arrested the victim's husband, an 87-year-old man.
“This is not something we typically see with individuals of this age,” said Bellevue Police Captain Landon Barnwell.
Investigators recovered a knife from the scene and are looking into the events leading up to the fatal encounter, including whether there were prior signs of violence.
A spokesperson for Sunrise Senior Living released a statement that reads, in part:
"We are deeply saddened by this situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones impacted, and we are committed to supporting our residents and team members, as needed, during this time."
Police described the incident as the first homicide in Bellevue this year and noted that violent crime among elderly individuals is rare.
